Big Game Shark off Lauderdale
Mike and his wife Kate from Boston come down about 3 times a year and fish with us. We ran out the Port early this morning to see if the wreck fish were in town. We got a bite right off the bat. Kate fought a 30 lb Amberjack for about 20 minutes. Somehow Jeff, the mate, got a trouble hook stuck in his right pinky finger, so I came off the bridge to assist Kate through it all. Kate caught the fish, but Jeff's finger wasn't feeling too good. We ran him in, picked up "Cheezy" and ran right back out to let Mike get in on some action. We heard of a few kings around, put the trolling gear out and Mike reeled in a 15 pounder. Fishing went down hill from there. It was extremely slow. (Sorry Guys!)
Around 2 PM, we headed back to the docks and picked up our afternoon split, Chris from New York. He told Jeff early on in the trip it was a dream to catch a big game shark while deep sea fishing off Fort Lauderdale. He said all he'd ever caught was striped bass up in New York. So we were going to make it happen. We headed southeast, dropped the shark bait down and before we could even get the second bait out, we were hooked. We weren't sure what it was, but it was big. Chris was at war with this fish for about 40 mintues. When we could finally see color in the water, I could see from the bridge that it was a huge hammerhead.
